Biodiesel is a renewable form of fuel, biodegradable fuel manufactured domestically from vegetable oils, animal fats, or other oils. Biodiesel is made through a chemical process called transesterification whereby the glycerin is separated from the fat or vegetable oil. The process leaves behind two products – methyl esters and glycerin. Methyl esters is the chemical name for biodiesel and glycerin is used in a variety of products, including soap.

Biodiesel can be pumped, stored and burned just like petroleum diesel, and can be used purely, or in blends with petroleum diesel fuel in any proportion. Power and fuel economy using biodiesel is practically identical to petroleum diesel fuel, and year round operation can be achieved by blending with diesel fuel.
Biodiesel provides significantly reduced emissions of carbon monoxide, particulate matter, unburned hydrocarbons, and sulfates compared to petroleum diesel. Additionally, biodiesel reduces emissions of carcinogenic compounds around more than 80% compared with petroleum diesel. When blended with petroleum diesel fuel, these emissions reductions are generally directly proportional to the amount of biodiesel in the blend.
Being derived from vegetable oils, biodiesel is naturally non-toxic. Studies show that the acute oral LD50 (lethal dose) of biodiesel is more than that of table salt. This means that table salt is more toxic than biodiesel.
